A baby born this year will have the chance to see India at the top of the most populous countries in the world. Some experts say this may have already happened after China reported days ago that its population has dwindled.

VOA spoke with Population Foundation of India Executive Director Poonam Muttreja.

"It is not unexpected. We knew we would surpass China's population in 2027. But because of the acceleration of China's population decline, it happened earlier."

Like China, India also has a population of 1.4 billion. But the overtaking by India is not just a number, but a very important demographic change.

In contrast to China's shrinking and aging population, nearly half of India's is under the age of 25. This age group constitutes a large market that can attract global investment, from which a large number of talents can emerge, at a time when the populations of many countries of the world are aging.

In a conversation with Voice of America SY Quraishi, former election commissioner and author of the book 'Population Myth', says that India is a giant market.

"We are a large consumer market and the largest supplier of trained labor."

But the numbers are also problematic, as India's working-age population is expected to reach 1 billion by 2030. A concern for young people in a country facing high unemployment rates.

"More people, less jobs, more competition, so it's not easy to get a job," says student Anmol Jain.

Others say that young people represent dynamism and opportunity.

"Young minds have more ideas. Entrepreneurship is the solution. Undoubtedly, young people like me do not have capital, but if we have ideas we can succeed", says student Aaren Gulia.

To achieve this, experts emphasize the need for policy makers to improve access to quality education. Only about 5% of the country's workforce is trained.

"There are two ways. One is to train the younger generation, the other is to improve the skills of those who do not have high skills to be fully productive... otherwise it would create a social conflict, with many young people unemployed, angry and unhappy," says Poonam Muttreja with the Population Foundation of India.

Students like Ishita Sud also want to better prepare to take advantage of the growing economy.

"To prepare us with the right skills, since what we now learn in college is not very important for the future."

India has a narrow window of opportunity to economically benefit from its young population. While this age group will continue to grow for the next 30 years, women are beginning to have fewer children as access to education increases and incomes rise. This means that India's population, just like in China, will begin to age faster./ VOA
