The right-wing populist Giorgia Meloni presents herself in the post of Italian prime minister as a guardian of the people. But one should not forget from which political wing she comes, experts say.

As few mistakes as possible, not attracting attention, creating a positive image - these were the leitmotifs of the new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the first 100 days of government. Or as the political scientist from Bologna, Sofia Ventura, says: "The first hundred days were somewhat colorless".

Until now, says Ventura, Meloni has not given "really relevant initiatives". The first phase was characterized by the prime minister's concern to present herself internationally as a reliable head of government. And so to offer their critics some room to attack.

Before the September elections, "Stern" magazine put the title: "The most dangerous woman in Europe" under a photo with Meloni. Spreading fear seems to be important to the 46-year-old. The first head of the European government, who started her political career in a neo-fascist party, has not deviated from her political principles.

Family tone

But Meloni tries to present himself in a softer tone. No appearances like Donald Trump or Jair Bolsonaro, a woman who cares for others appears on stage.

"Giorgia's notes" is the name of the video-podcast with which Meloni speaks to people in the first person since taking office, in a loving tone, always with her personal notebook in hand.

"Giorgia" writes on the cover of her notebook as if she were a young chick. Meloni says that she has no problem at all with "explaining her decisions" to people.

For this reason, she decided to open her notebook and talk about the work of the government in the first 100 days of government. Despite such gestures, political scientist Ventura says: No one should forget which political wing Meloni comes from. It is too early to judge her as head of government. Even further, it must be said that: "Giorgia Meloni does not have a liberal culture, and there is no doubt about that."

Lack of competence

But Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia party has suffered a decline due to a dispute over petrol price hikes. However, this right-wing party still remains the biggest force in Italy with over 30 percent. It is also unusual for Italy that things remain largely quiet in the right-wing coalition. Even the men of this political wing, such as Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi, have remained silent. Meloni, who is sociable from the outside, leads her government coalition inside the country with an iron fist./ DW
