Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated once again that he will not support Sweden's application for NATO membership. The Turkish leader said that Sweden "shouldn't even bother."

Sweden and Finland applied last year to join the trans-Atlantic alliance after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The two countries then tried to win Turkey's support after the latter almost immediately turned against it. However, Ankara suspended the talks last month after a far-right Danish politician burned a copy of the Koran in Stockholm.

"Sweden at this point should not even bother. We will not say yes to her application for NATO as long as they allowed the burning of the Koran," President Erdogan said.

The Turkish president implied that the green light can only be given to Finland, but Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto stated that his country will continue to walk together with Sweden in the membership process.

Turkey and Hungary are the only countries that have not approved the application of Finland and Sweden for NATO membership. The decision to expand the Alliance, according to the rules, seems to have been taken unanimously.
