Russia releases former US Marine held in prison for 4 years "on humanitarian grounds"

Russia has released a former US Marine who was taken into custody in 2022 after reportedly being in extremely serious health condition.

Robert Gilman, of Massachusetts, was released " from detention on humanitarian grounds " and traveled on a US plane to Washington on Tuesday, according to Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy.

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey wrote on social media that Gilman was battling a severe form of pneumonia before his release.

Gilman was 28 when he was arrested after kicking a police officer while drunk during a train journey to Moscow.

" About 50 days ago, Robert was diagnosed with dissociative stupor, a condition in which he is unresponsive, unable to interact or feed himself ," Markey said.

His family is awaiting his arrival at a military hospital in Texas.

" I am so grateful to President Trump for saving my brother's life ," his sister, Lexie Hudson, said in a statement.

" There is no other reason Robert is alive today, other than the fact that President Trump heard about the case and intervened ."
