The issue of sending North Koreans to fight alongside Moscow's forces in the war following the invasion of Ukraine is well documented.

According to foreign media, perhaps less well-known is the significant number of people from Africa who have been recruited to join Russia's war in Ukraine.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister, claims that at least 1,436 citizens from 36 African countries are currently fighting in the ranks of Russia's occupying army in Ukraine.

He said this number represents those who have been identified, although the real number may be higher.

"Russia recruits citizens of African countries using a variety of methods," he said.

"Some are offered money, while others are deceived and do not understand what they are signing for or are forced to do so under pressure," said Sybiha.

He said that signing a contract to join Russian forces was "equivalent to signing a death sentence."

"Foreign citizens in the Russian army have a sad fate," he said.

"Most of them are immediately sent to so-called 'meat raids', where they are quickly killed."
