The Vatican will not participate in US President Donald Trump's so-called Peace Council, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See's top diplomat, confirmed, adding that efforts to manage crisis situations should be led by the United Nations.

Leo, the first American Pope and a critic of some of Trump's policies, was invited to join the board in January.

The new body will hold its first meeting in Washington on Thursday to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza. Italy and the European Union have said their representatives plan to attend as observers after not joining the board.

"The Holy See will not participate in the Peace Board due to its particular nature that differs from that of other states. Our concern is that at the international level, above all, it should be the UN for crisis management ," was Parolin's statement.

Many international law experts say Trump's oversight of a board to handle the affairs of a foreign territory resembled a colonial structure.
