Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi said that the war and the trauma caused by the massacres aroused feelings of anger and hatred in the souls of the Kosovar people. Thaçi said that he has always called for peace and tolerance.
"After NATO entered Kosovo, the citizens of Kosovo were not fighting, they were celebrating the long-awaited freedom, during 9 years, we were citizens of the UN. During this time, I called on the population to be patient, to be tolerant, united and to have faith in the internationals, independence was the fruit of our alliance.
After independence, I worked with the EU, the US and other factors to normalize relations in Serbia. What we faced was not only war, it was a century of oppression, collective traumas caused a sense of anger and revenge during and after the war. President Clinton came after the war and told us 'we won the war, you have to win the peace'. I took this message seriously. I used my voice to call for peace, tolerance.
For the most part, until the declaration of independence, I was out of power. When I came to power, I came with electoral victory. Throughout the entire time, I respected democratic norms and election results, whenever the party was in power, it was in coalition with other political parties. Together we built the state.
Russian and Serbian propaganda would not forgive easily after failing to delegitimize Kosovo's independence here in The Hague, they attacked the EC. They raised horrific allegations of organ trafficking, allegations that had been previously investigated, The Hague, Uni EULEX and dismissed as baseless.
"As soon as the Dick Marty report was published, I gathered the main international representatives. I asked for another independent investigation, they promised to remove the black cloud over Kosovo. Dick Marty fell victim to their propaganda and in the end they tried to kill him while trying to blame us," said Thaçi.
