Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has reiterated in his closing statement before the trial panel at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague that "I am completely innocent."
He began his speech by first wishing his homeland a happy Independence Day.
Thaçi declared that he is innocent of the charges, while expressing regret for all victims, regardless of ethnicity.
"On February 17, 2008, feeling the heartbeat of our ancestors, we declared Kosovo an independent and sovereign state. Today, from this hall, I would like to convey my warmest congratulations to all citizens on this magnificent holiday. For almost 3 years, you have heard the accusations of the Prosecution and the arguments of the defense.
You have seen the facts, you have heard the truth. There is only one thing: the accusations do not hold up. I am completely innocent, but I have said and say with complete conviction: I sympathize and express my regret for all the victims in Kosovo, regardless of their ethnicity. At the time of the massacres in early 1998, I was a student in Zurich.
"I was not making plans to take control of Kosovo, but for university exams. The only person who was making morbid plans was Slobodan Milosevic. Plans for a new genocide in Kosovo. Therefore, like many other Kosovar citizens, I was forced to leave Kosovo because the Milosevic regime had followed me. He had sentenced me in absentia on the charge that I had violated his discriminatory laws," Thaçi said.
We remind you that today is the last session of closing statements in the case against former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament, Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP, Rexhep Selimi at the Special Court in The Hague.
The former KLA superiors are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, to which all four have pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution has requested that they be found guilty and sentenced to 45 years in prison each, but the defense teams have argued that there is no evidence for the alleged crimes and have requested their release.
After the closing arguments, the case will be sent to the panel of judges. The judges have three months to reach a decision on the case, or to request an extension of the deadline for reaching a decision.
