In his speech before the trial panel at the Hague Tribunal, Rexhep Selimi requested a declaration of innocence, emphasizing that the charges brought by the prosecution are not based on facts and that, according to him, they are tarnishing the history of Kosovo and the war of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).
Selimi said that this was the third time he had spoken in the courtroom and he hopes it will be the last.
He stressed that after several years of legal proceedings, he hopes that the trial panel has had enough time to understand, in his opinion, the justice of the war and the lack of basis in the prosecution's claims.
"Serbia never hid its intention towards Albanians. So I ask again: What should we have done? Wait our turn to be killed, or flee our homes? The KLA was not created out of desire but out of necessity," he told the court in The Hague.
Selimi added that being a comrade-in-arms of Adem Jashari is the greatest honor.
Rexhep Selim's closing speech:
More than 5 years have passed.
They haven't been easy for us, but they haven't been insignificant for the history of my country either.
After all these years, there is also a positive element.
I hope the judges have had enough time to understand that our fight was just.
The indictment is unfounded, and today the course of the process has proven me right.
I did not stand here to defend myself, because my lawyers did that.
I won't even tell you about justice, because you know better. Today, I only ask you to practice it, justice.
I declare that I do not seek the punishment of the General Staff, its target was precisely the KLA, the independents themselves.
It gave me the impression that they attacked Independence itself as the work of the Joint Criminal Enterprise.
The prosecution made accusations such as "The General Staff demanded Independence." Or "The General Staff declared that they would not support autonomy."
It is difficult to understand against whom this indictment was filed?
Against us because we fought for Kosovo's independence?
This remains to be assessed by you, the esteemed jury.
They also want to divide the Kosovar society in two.
In that those who were for independence and those who were for autonomy.
As if they want to create division in our society at all costs.
I quote, "The General Staff demanded Independence, while the parties that wanted autonomy were declared traitors."
Honorable Members. In Kosovo, there was no party that was against independence, and none that wanted autonomy under Serbia.
All parties were for independence, just as the KLA's goal was.
To present independence as radical, and autonomy as modern. As if the prosecution will divide Albanians among themselves.
The liberation war cannot be equated with the murderous state of Serbia.
To equate the resistance of a people with a criminal plan... this equation is not only incorrect but also deeply unjust.
The history of Kosovo cannot be rewritten, especially not in a courtroom. The history of Kosovo has been written by its citizens.
When Serbia and Milosevic were killing my peers... closing schools and hospitals, hunting us down to kill us, and implementing ethnic and genocidal cleansing?
What were we to do? Not to react? Serbia never hid its intention.
Clark showed that Milosevic believed that "all Albanians should be killed."
And we knew this too because Serbia has never hidden its intentions towards Albanians.
What were we supposed to do? Wait our turn to be killed?
Therefore we must resist.
That's why I believed that Kosovo needed people to defend itself.
That's why I joined Adem Jashari.
The KLA was created out of necessity, because of Serbia's systematic violence.
