UK right-wing populist Nigel Farage wins election

Nigel Farage has won the Clacton by-election, which was boycotted by the main Westminster parties. The Reform UK leader received 22,239 votes, while Coun Binface came second with 9,455 votes, see the full results.

The race was triggered when Farage resigned as an MP last month, triggering a by-election in which he said he would stand.

Farage made the announcement while under investigation over a £5 million donation he did not declare, this victory will not stop questions about his finances.

Farage, one of Britain's leading Brexit campaigners, in a highly unusual move, did not show up for the vote count in the seaside resort of Clacton in southern England because he said police had informed him of a campaign to upset the result. He also cancelled a victory speech planned for later on Friday.

"I'm damned if I'm going to stand on a stage, having won a huge victory... and be humiliated and looked down upon by no one," Farage told supporters at a party before the result was announced.

The election was triggered after Farage resigned from parliament last month to seek a new mandate from voters, in what he described as a fight against an establishment determined to discredit him over his receipt of undeclared gifts from donors.

The result, while a victory, highlighted the political risks of Farage's risk. With a parliamentary inquiry into his finances set to resume, the vote may have done little to remove a threat he wanted to sidestep.

Labour Party leader Bridget Phillipson says Nigel Farage's success in the by-election "does not clear his name", while questions remain about his finances.

Before announcing he would resign to seek a by-election in Clacton, Farage faced an investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog for a possible breach of MPs' rules on financial interests.
