Mysterious new virus alarms China!

China is facing a surge in infections with a “novel” respiratory virus, leading to overcrowded hospitals, emergency measures and public concern about the outbreak. Specifically, in China’s northern provinces this winter, there has been a surge in cases of infection with this “novel” virus, especially among children.

Although stories about a "mystery virus" in China are spreading on social media and videos are reminiscent of those from five years ago, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which killed seven million people, this virus has been identified as human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

@dailymail China is reportedly being ravaged by a mysterious viral outbreak that is overwhelming some hospitals. Videos on social media appear to show hospital units overrun with patients in face masks, and parents holding sick children in long lines in pediatric units. There have also been unverified reports that crematoriums and funeral homes are being overwhelmed. The alarming scenes and lack of official commentary have led some to draw similarities to the early days of the Covid outbreak in China. Local news reports have blamed a little-known virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV) — which normally causes a mild cold-like illness — for the latest outbreak, although officials have yet to confirm this. However, Beijing downplays the significance of this development as an “annual winter phenomenon.” According to the British Independent, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Friday: “Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season, but they are less severe and spread over a smaller range compared to last year.”

What is HMPV?

Human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold and flu. Although the illness is usually mild, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, especially in infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

The virus is not new, but it has attracted attention amid a surge in cases, particularly in children under 14 years old in northern China. First identified in 2001, HMPV is an RNA virus that spreads through breathing or contact with contaminated surfaces. Infections have been identified previously in various countries.

Its symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and fatigue, with an incubation period of three to six days. Unlike COVID, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for HMPV; treatment mainly involves managing symptoms.

Rising cases of HMPV in China

The surge in cases coincides with colder weather, conditions that typically encourage the spread of respiratory viruses. Health officials say the surge is consistent with seasonal trends. China’s National Administration for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported a surge in respiratory infections, including HMPV, during the winter. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared the situation a global emergency, but the surge in cases has prompted authorities to strengthen monitoring systems. A pilot pneumonia surveillance program has been launched, ensuring that laboratories and health agencies report and manage cases more effectively.

Can the HMPV virus spread to other countries?

Hong Kong has reported several cases of HMPV. Neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Taiwan are closely monitoring the situation. Cambodia's Department of Infectious Disease Control has issued warnings about HMPV, noting its similarities to COVID-19 infection and influenza. Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control said the virus poses a greater risk to children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

In neighboring India, officials said there was no need to panic as HMPV was "like any other respiratory virus."

"There has been news of an outbreak of metapneumovirus in China. Let me be very clear about this. Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes the common cold," said a health official in India.

Also reassuring citizens and tourists, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said: "I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners coming to China. It is safe to travel to China."
