US President claims media is spreading fake news

US President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico will no longer be allowed access to the White House, escalating his clash with the US media.

Trump made the announcement Friday in a post on his Twitter account, accusing the three media organizations of consistently reporting “fake news” about his administration. He did not specify what materials or reporting had led to the decision.

"The media should not be able to consistently write or report fabrications and lies when covering the President, the Trump Administration, or the United States," Trump wrote, warning that other media outlets may join the banned list.

Later, during an event in the Oval Office, Trump said the decision was not related to a single event, but to what he described as a collection of reports over the years.

He also mentioned the New York Times and the Washington Post as media outlets he considers "fake news," leaving open the possibility of other measures.

CNN: Unlawful attack on press freedom

CNN immediately opposed the announcement, calling a potential ban an "unlawful attack" on press freedom.

The network stated that it stands behind its team at the White House and that its journalists have a constitutional right to report without hindrance or interference from the government.

Politico also stated that it will continue to report on the Trump administration and that it will defend its rights under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, did not immediately comment on the announcement.

The reporters were still at the White House.

After Trump's announcement, CNN and Politico reporters remained on the White House premises. A CNN team was also traveling with Vice President JD Vance to and from an event in Iowa.

For now, the concrete way in which the ban will be implemented remains unclear.

The decision is expected to face legal challenges, as press freedom organizations and constitutional law experts have raised questions about its compliance with the First Amendment.

Constant clashes with the media

The latest clash comes after a series of conflicts between the Trump administration and the American media during his second presidential term.

Earlier, the administration had restricted access to Associated Press reporters in areas such as the Oval Office and Air Force One, following a dispute over the use of the names “Gulf of Mexico” and “Gulf of America.” The case is still pending in court.

According to a 1977 court precedent, after the White House creates special facilities and structures for accredited journalists, limiting access based on the content of the reporting could raise constitutional issues.

Press freedom organizations have warned that any exclusion of media outlets because of their views or reporting could face challenges in the courts.

Meanwhile, Trump has left open the possibility that the list of media outlets excluded from the White House could expand.
