The Great Withdrawal - US Considers Withdrawing Up to 40,000 Troops from Europe

The United States is considering a major reduction in its military presence in Europe, which could include the withdrawal of tens of thousands of troops, as well as aircraft, ships and weapons.

According to seven current and former American and Western officials cited by NBC News, the Pentagon is considering withdrawing about a third of the American contingent, or about 25,000 military personnel.

However, some sources say the reduction could be even greater, affecting up to half of US forces in Europe, or about 40,000 military personnel.

The plans have caused concern in European capitals and among American lawmakers of both parties, who fear that such a withdrawal could weaken deterrence against Russia.

"A 25,000 troop cut is in no way acceptable. You can't contain Russia at low cost," declared one Republican lawmaker.

The reduction could mainly affect Germany, Italy and Spain, where the bulk of US forces are based. The leaders of all three countries have previously clashed with US President Donald Trump over the war in Iran.

The review of the US military presence is part of a six-month process launched by the Pentagon in June.

According to a senior US Department of Defense official, the process aims to "ensure that our positioning is consistent with President Trump's sensible 'America First' strategy."

US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, head of the United States European Command and supreme commander of Allied Forces Europe, is expected to present his analysis to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on September 18.

The analysis will contain four alternatives, including reducing ground, air and naval forces or relocating some units to NATO's eastern flank.

Hegseth is expected to receive final recommendations on November 6 and then present them to the US president.

No final decision has been made yet.
