Spanish lawmakers today approved a bill to impose an arms embargo on Israel, a measure supported by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to "stop the genocide" in Gaza.

The bill was approved by 178 votes in favour and 169 against, with Sanchez's government finally receiving the support of four lawmakers from the far-left Podemos party, which had been in doubt about its vote until this morning.

"This government has proposed an embargo against the Netanyahu government with the aim of ending the genocide in Gaza and you will vote against it," Pedro Sánchez told Alberto Núñez Feijó, leader of the People's Party (PP, the conservative right), which opposed the measure, during a parliamentary control session this morning.

This embargo, effectively imposed by Spain since October 2023, according to Pedro Sánchez, was announced by the country's prime minister on September 8, as part of a series of measures aimed at "ending the genocide in Gaza."

These announcements provoked a strong reaction from the Israeli government, which summoned its ambassador for explanations in 2024, when Spain recognized the State of Palestine.

The approved text was initially supposed to be presented to parliament on Tuesday, but the vote was ultimately postponed until today so as not to coincide with the anniversary of the Hamas attacks, according to the Spanish press.
