US President Donald Trump has once again caused controversy with an unusual statement on Platform X, where he called for the arrest of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

"The Mayor of Chicago should be in jail for failing to protect ICE officers. So should Governor Pritzker," Trump wrote, but without presenting concrete evidence to support his accusations.

The statement comes at a time of increased tension between the federal administration and local authorities, after the president ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to the city of Chicago, with the aim, according to him, of combating illegal immigration and crime in the Democratic-run cities.

The decision was implemented despite strong opposition from local and state authorities.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has called the move an "authoritarian march," declaring that the state will use every legal mechanism to stop what he calls a "power grab" by the federal administration.

On the other hand, Trump has defended the decision, calling Chicago a "war zone" after recent protests against immigration officials in the third-largest US city.

Trump's call to imprison the two elected officials comes as another high-profile political rival, former FBI Director James Comey, was set to appear in court to face criminal charges that have been widely criticized as weak.

Trump has frequently called for the imprisonment of his opponents since he first entered politics in 2015, but Comey is the first to face criminal prosecution.

Trump has vowed to use the power of the federal government to target his enemies. In addition to Comey, his Justice Department is investigating several other high-profile critics. All have denied wrongdoing, and Comey is expected to plead not guilty to charges of lying to Congress.

Hundreds of Texas National Guard soldiers have gathered at an Army facility outside Chicago, despite objections from Pritzker, Johnson and other Democratic leaders in the state.

Trump has threatened to deploy troops to more US cities, which he said last week could serve as "training grounds" for the armed forces.
