Americans will vote on Tuesday to choose who will lead the White House for the next four years. The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is so close, however, that their teams are bracing for legal battles that may ensue.

At the beginning of this year, the Republican candidate for president, Donald Trump, said that if the results of the presidential elections on November 5 will be "fair, fair and free", he would accept them.

Election officials are confident that the process will be fair, secure and transparent, but the former president has increasingly expressed concern that his opponents could rig the election. "They are a bunch of frauds. If we manage to control (manipulation), we will have a tremendous victory," Mr. Trump said.

During an interview that aired last month on the NBC television network, Vice President Kamala Harris told reporter Hallie Jackson that her team was prepared if Mr. Trump lost the election and tried to overturn its result.

"We will deal with election night and the following days, whatever happens. We have the resources, the expertise and the right attention as well,” Ms Harris said.

The Republican National Assembly has created the so-called "Election Integrity Program" in the battleground states. Their legal representatives have filed more than a hundred lawsuits over suspected irregularities related to voting rules, but many of them have been dismissed by the courts.

Democrats have launched their own legal efforts, including a lawsuit to prevent possible delays in certifying the result in the state of Georgia.

In tight presidential races like this year's, legal battles are to be expected. Most of them will happen in undecided states, analysts predict.

"At the polling stations, we often see debates about whether the ballots are being handled the way they should be. "On the day after the election, there are disputes over whether or not individual voters, who are not on the rolls, are eligible to vote, and whether their vote should be counted," says Michael Thorning, of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Meanwhile, legal experts say that anyone who has allegations of manipulation must present evidence.

"Legal experts (of political parties) should be careful with their claims. They must make sure they can prove them, otherwise they can be subject to disciplinary measures, as we have seen in 2020," says Robert Graci, of the independent organization "Keep Our Republic".

Mr. Trump's former lawyer Rudy Giuliani, for example, had his license revoked for spreading baseless claims that the 2020 election was rigged.

Legal battles could delay the announcement of the result of the presidential election. But if Tuesday night's results are clearly in favor of one candidate, by a clear margin, analysts say it will be much more difficult for the opposing party to contest the results./ VOA
