Pro-European Moldovan President Maia Sandu has won a second term after Sunday's tense election, which was seen as a choice of the country's orientation towards either Europe or Russia.

The electoral commission said Sandu won 55% of the vote according to preliminary results in the former Soviet country, where voter turnout was 54% according to the BBC network, so about a quarter of voters gave her the vote.

In a speech late yesterday, she said that she will be the president of all Moldovans.

Her rival Alexandr Stoianoglo, backed by the Russian Socialist Party, had called for closer relations with Moscow.

Yesterday, the president's advisers declared that there was "massive interference" by Russia in the electoral process, with the aim of "distorting the result".

Russia denied the accusations, calling them ridiculous.

But even Stoianoglo, the former general prosecutor dismissed from office by Sandu, has denied that he is pro-Kremlin.

At the close of voting, both 52-year-old Sandu and her rival thanked the voters, while Stoianoglo did so in both Russian and Romanian. Romanian is the main language spoken in Moldova, while Russian is also widely spoken from the country's Soviet past.

Stoianoglo was initially leading the vote in Moldova, with more than 51%, but Sandu won in the capital Chisinau, and is believed to have been supported by Moldovans in exile.

Late last night she praised the vote of the immigrants, saying that "Moldova has given a lesson in democracy, which should be written in the history books".

Moldova has been a Soviet republic for 51 years, bordered on the east and west by Ukraine and Romania. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe, it has a population of 2.5 million and about 1.2 million in emigration. /BBC
