Two oil tankers attacked in Persian Gulf, one killed, several missing

Two foreign tankers carrying fuel were attacked in Iraqi waters in the Persian Gulf overnight, causing fires on both ships and killing one sailor, while search and rescue operations are underway to find the missing.

According to the director of the Iraqi Port Authority, Farhan al-Fartoush, authorities have so far evacuated 38 crew members.

Al-Ikhbariya television network broadcast footage showing a ship at sea, with thick smoke and flames rising from it. In a text broadcast at the same time, the network referred to the “death of a crew member” of one of the two ships, quoting the Iraqi official.

The circumstances in which the attack occurred have not yet been clarified, while no further details have yet been provided about the identity of the ships.

This development comes after reports that three ships had been attacked in the same area.

One of these attacks caused a fire on a ship, forcing most of its crew to abandon ship for safety reasons.

Information about these incidents reinforces concerns about the safety of navigation in the Persian Gulf, one of the world's most important maritime energy corridors.
