At least 40 athletes participating in the Paris Olympics have tested positive for Covid-19.
The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed on Tuesday, according to the French newspaper L'Equipe.
"It's not surprising to see athletes infected, because the virus circulates quite quickly in other countries," Maria Van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist responsible for pandemic readiness at THE WHO, said during a news conference in Geneva.
"In recent months, many countries have recorded Covid outbreaks, including at the Olympics, where at least 40 athletes resulted positive," she said, adding that the IOC, along with the WHO, have "looked at all the different approaches needed to be put into action" at people-populated events like the Olympic Games, and taken "necessary steps."
