A man in Indonesia killed his neighbour after repeatedly asking him why he was not married, police said.

Parlindungan Siregar, 45, attacked 60-year-old Asgim Irianto, with a piece of wood at about 8pm on July 29. The incident took place in Tapanuli Selatan in north Sultan.

Assistant Police Commissioner Maria Marpaung said on July 31 that Irianto went outside after Siregar attacked him, but collapsed after being hit in the head. Siregar continued to hit him until their neighbors intervened.

They took Irianto to a local community health centre, but he died on the way.

Siregar was arrested a short time later and admitted to plotting the murder of his neighbour.

"He was determined to beat Mr Asgim to death because of frequent mockery of his single status," police said.

Police said the neighbours did not have as good a relationship with the perpetrator.
