WHO has issued a high-risk epidemiological alert for Oropouche virus in Latin America. Between January 1 and July 30, 2024, 8,078 cases of infection were confirmed.
There are 7,284 cases in Brazil, 356 in Bolivia, 290 in Peru and 74 in Cuba and Colombia. 65% of the total was recorded in the Brazilian Amazon.
However, according to the World Health Organization, transmission of Oropouche fever has also been recorded in 10 Brazilian states outside the Amazon region. Among them is the state of Bahia, where two deaths were also reported.
The data was made public by OPS (Pan American Health Organization). According to experts, the risk associated with the Oropouche virus is increasing due to climate change, deforestation of the Amazon, uncontrolled urbanization and human activities that affect the natural habitat, thus favoring the spread of the pathogen.
What is Oropouche virus and what are the symptoms? Oropouche belongs to the group of arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya and zika, and presents as symptoms such as: fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, as well as dizziness, chills, nausea and vomiting.
