United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that US forces will launch ground strikes in Venezuela against drug traffickers. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said the US is already stopping 96% of the drugs entering the country via sea routes.

"It wouldn't be very wise of me to tell you this, because we're supposed to be a little secretive. But we're cracking down on drugs at levels that no one has ever seen. We've eliminated 96% of the drugs that were coming in by sea. Now we're starting from the land, and from the land it's a lot easier. We're not going to let people destroy our youth."

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has declared that his country will not succumb to Donald Trump's threat.

"Their formula of lies, pressure, blackmail and threats does not work with us. It does not work and it will never work ," Maduro declared during a television appearance.

Meanwhile, the US seizure of the tanker "Skipper" off the coast of Venezuela marks the first seizure of a Venezuelan oil cargo since US sanctions were imposed in 2019.

According to data, over 20 US military strikes have been carried out in the Caribbean and Pacific this year against suspected drug trafficking vehicles, killing around 90 people. The United States accuses the Venezuelan president of being the head of the drug trade, a charge denied by Maduro.

Meanwhile, amid tensions between the two countries, the admiral who was in charge of US military forces in Latin America has been removed from office.
