Mysterious pneumonia is increasingly affecting children, WHO seeks information

The World Health Organization (WHO) has asked China to provide detailed information on the increase in respiratory illnesses and pneumonia outbreaks reported in children.

This comes after the National Health Commission in Beijing, in a press conference on November 13, reported an increase in the phenomenon in the country, reports La Repubblica.

The UN health agency said in a statement that Chinese authorities attributed the rise in cases to the lifting of anti-Covid restrictions and the circulation of pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection affecting young children), respiratory syncytial virus and the virus that causes Covid-19.

In addition, Chinese authorities have emphasized the need to strengthen surveillance in health facilities and communities, as well as strengthening the management capacity of the health system.

The WHO said northern China has reported an increase in flu-like illnesses compared to the same period in the previous three years.

They are awaiting further information, as the agency recommended following the most appropriate measures to reduce the risk of infection, based on vaccination, distance from sick people, isolation in case of infection, tests and medical treatments.
