Over 470 arrested in London during protest against ban on “Palestine

More than 450 people have been arrested in central London during the largest protest held since the Palestine Action group was banned as a terrorist organisation.

The Guardian writes that on Saturday evening, the Metropolitan Police stated: “Parliament Square and Whitehall have been cleared. By 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action. A further eight arrests were made for various offences, including five for assaulting officers.”

Police said the total of 474 arrests was the highest number of arrests made in a single operation in at least a decade.

Ahead of the planned event, the Metropolitan Police had requested support from other police forces to create a significant security presence, anticipating a high number of arrests.

On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of people gathered in Parliament Square in a demonstration organized by the group Defend Our Juries, who said about 1,000 people with banners had participated.

According to the police, at the beginning of the protest there were around 500–600 people in the square, but “many of them were not actively participating.”

A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries stated: “The fact that so many people came out today to protest, risking arrest, shows the disgust and shame they feel at our government’s complicity in a live-streamed genocide. It also shows how far they are willing to go to protect the ancient freedoms of this country.”

According to the group, most of those arrested have been released on street bail and allowed to go home, calling the situation an embarrassment to Yvette Cooper, the UK Home Secretary, who promoted the group's ban.

In the evening, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper thanked the police officers and reaffirmed the ban on Palestine Action, saying: “Many people may not be aware of the reality of this group, but the assessments are clear, this is not a peaceful organisation. The national and public security of the UK must always be our priority.”

The protest started at 1:00 PM, but police began arresting people a little earlier, mainly those holding signs in support of Palestine Action. A woman, as she was being pulled away from the police, shouted:

"You all have your loved ones, but you are arresting the wrong people. Arrest those who are there (pointing to parliament), those who are co-responsible for the genocide."

Two women, one in her 70s, were arrested during an interview with The Guardian. One of them said: “People are tired of seeing genocide on their screens. What Palestine Action is doing is protest action, not terrorism. RAF jets are the ones who are terrorists, they go and kill children.”

Palestine Action was banned in June, days after its activists attacked an RAF military base and vandalized two military aircraft with spray paint. Support for the group is now a criminal offense, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
