French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted after statements by his American counterpart Donald Trump, who said that the French head of state is "mistreated by his wife."
While delivering his usual criticism of NATO, which he continues to say has not helped in Iran, Trump took things a step further by including Macron's wife.
The US president said Brigitte "treats him extremely badly", in an apparent reference to a video from last year that appeared to show her pushing her husband's face into his before they got off a plane in Vietnam.
"I call France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from a right-sided injury to the jaw."
Macron told reporters as he arrived in South Korea that Trump's comments "do not deserve a response."
He went on to describe the comments as "neither elegant nor up to standard."
Trump also took the opportunity to repeat his criticism of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer yesterday, saying the prime minister told him he would "have to ask" his team whether to send aircraft carriers.
