Who was Fethullah Gülen, the sworn rival of President Erdogan?
Fethullah Gülen and Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Fethullah Gülen, widely known for his movement, the promotion of tolerant Islam, the education of the conservative elite, one of the most influential figures in Turkey, has for years shouldered the fight against the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, once friends. and close allies.

Many have known him for the latter, but Gülen reached this point after a long road.

He was born in 1941 in a village in the Erzurum province of Anatolia and was the son of an Imam. Following his father's path, he became an Imam in 1959, but he also demonstrated impressive oratory skills.

In 1968 he took the post of Imam for the Aegean region in Izmir, a post which enabled him to travel a lot and during which he gained many followers. At the end of the 1970s, he started working in the first private school institutions, which were under the influence of his teachings.

Gülen asserted that Muslims must commit themselves "against the decline of moral values" in society - that is, for placing the values of family and religion above the modern individual, but within the structures of the secular state. Gülen's moderate movement reached its peak of influence in the 1990s, when Necmettin Erbakan's party won the majority of votes in parliamentary elections.

Compared to this party, Gülen's positions were more moderate. For example, he was against women wearing headscarves. Gulen lived in Pennsylvania, United States of America, a decision he made in 1999, when he decided not to return to Turkey.

His movement has made a name for itself in the US because it is understood as a reform movement in the Islamic world, which is committed to modern education and dialogue between religions. Staying in the US has not at all prevented Gülen from increasing his influence in Turkey, especially after the conflict with his ally Erdogan, which many analysts say started from the ambition of both for power, since the division between the two successful factors of the spoils of war had long since begun.

There are also rumors that Gülen was shadowing Erdogan, or opinions that Erdogan no longer accepted the tolerant religious model promoted by Gülen.
