The reduction of opening hours for commercial shops is being considered by the business community in Greece as part of measures to reduce increased energy costs.
The first step is being taken in Thessaloniki, the capital of the Macedonia region in Greece, to continue with Athens where more than half of the country's 10 million population lives.
The decision includes all commercial and service units including supermarkets and shopping centers.
He comes to try to reduce costs due to the problems created by the energy crisis, announced the Chamber of Commerce of Thessaloniki.
Specifically, it is planned that from Monday, October 10, the working hours will be set as follows:
Monday: 10:00-16:00 Tuesday: 10:00-19:00 Wednesday: 10:00-16:00 Thursday: 10:00-19:00 Friday: 10:00- 19:00 Saturday: 10:00-16:00. Sunday off.
For many years, Greece has applied strict shop opening hours. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday they open from 9 am to 2 pm, while supermarkets and shopping centers open until 9 pm, on Saturday 8 pm.
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday also in the afternoon from 17 to 21. However, many shops have applied in recent years to stay open from breakfast to dinner.
The Board of Directors of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce said that it came up with this request after the decrease in turnover and the government's request for a reduction in electricity consumption, anticipating a problematic winter.
The president of the Athens Trade Association said that this schedule should be applied to all shops of all types, including bars and restaurants, "so that we do not face unfair competition again as in the recent past".
The decision determines that there is no limited time validity, as long as the emergency conditions last.
This change brings a 7.5 percent reduction in daily energy consumption in the neighboring country.
In Albania, shops are mostly open from early morning until late in the evening, from Monday to Sunday.
