The Kremlin has denied that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had a phone conversation last week in which the US president-elect was said to have urged the Russian leader not to escalate the war in Ukraine.

The Washington Post and Reuters reported that during the call, which reportedly took place in the days after the US election, Trump reminded Putin of America's significant military presence in Europe.

According to several other sources, the pair continued to discuss the goal of peace on the continent, as well as the prospect of convening a meeting to discuss the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

The Kremlin has denied that such a call took place, calling the Washington Post report "pure fiction."

"This is the clearest example of the quality of information published in well-known publications. It is completely incorrect. This is pure fiction; it's just false information," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He added that Putin has "no specific plans" to speak with Mr. Trump at the moment.
