Albulena Haxhiu has been elected Speaker of Parliament and the Assembly of Kosovo has been constituted.
Haxhiu received 66 votes in favor, while 44 deputies voted against and 8 abstained.
"Today I take on this task with full awareness of the constitutional weight it carries. I will honor this trust with daily work, transparency and full dedication ," said Haxhiu in his speech in the Assembly.
She stated that citizens expect the former KLA leaders to be declared innocent and return to the country as soon as possible.
"The KLA war was a just war for liberation. It is known who the aggressor was, it is known who committed crimes in our country, they are recorded and witnessed by the whole world. Those crimes were committed by Serbia, which never faced justice seriously, on the contrary, the war criminals were recycled into power and were amnestied. We expect that the former KLA leaders will return to the country and to their families as soon as possible and that these attempts by the prosecution will end as soon as possible. We must be together for this. Therefore, dear deputies, especially on issues of national interest, we must speak with a clear voice and have a common position with the commitment that this republic has institutions that stand up to it even in the most difficult moments", said Haxhiu.
Unlike the previous legislature when Haxhiu failed to be elected speaker of parliament after several marathon sessions, in this legislature the first attempt was enough to receive a majority of votes.
Albulena Haxhiu was the most voted woman for MP in the December 28 elections, when she received over 174 thousand votes. Haxhiu previously held the position of Minister of Justice in the Kurti cabinet for 4 years.
The new Deputy Speakers of the Assembly have been elected: Ardian Gola of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Vlora Çitaku of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Kujtim Shala of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Emilja Rexhepi of the multiethnic group, and Slavko Simi? of the Serbian List.
