Chaos in Belgium, air traffic control system down! Flights diverted and airports

Belgian airspace is currently closed due to a technical problem at Skeyes, the Belgian public company responsible for air traffic control.

This was announced by Brussels Airport, the company that manages the main airport in Zaventem, specifying that it is currently unknown how long the closure will last.

A malfunction in the air traffic control system at Skeyes appeared around 3 p.m., explained company spokesman Kurt Verwilligen, according to the Belga agency.

All aircraft in Skeyes-controlled airspace (up to 7,500 meters above sea level) were diverted to nearby locations, with a backup system ensuring safety.

The origin of the failure is currently unknown. No aircraft can take off or land at the airports of Zaventem, Antwerp, Ostend, Charleroi and Liège.
