Two famous Russian figure skaters were on the plane that crashed in Washington, according to Russian media.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, 52-year-old Yevgenia Syskova and 55-year-old Vadim Naumov, who were a married couple, were among 64 passengers aboard the passenger plane that crashed into the icy waters of the Potomac River late Wednesday night (early this morning our time) after colliding with an air force helicopter. The Ria agency reports that their young son Maxim, who is following in his parents' footsteps in sports, may have been on board the fatal plane.
The pair had won first place at the 1994 World Pair Skating Championships. During their careers, Siskova and Naumov won many awards and honors at various world events. After retiring in 1998, they began working as coaches and have since lived in the United States.
Their son Maxim had competed in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas from January 20 to 26.
It is not clear at this stage if there are any survivors from the plane crash that has rocked the US. CBS News reported earlier that 18 bodies had been recovered.
Many skaters on the plane
The U.S. Figure Skating Federation confirmed that “several” members of the sports community were on the plane. The sport’s governing body said the athletes, coaches and family members were returning from a training camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
"We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide more information as it becomes available," a statement said.
Skater Luke Wang wrote on Platform X: "Praying for all the passengers flying from Wichita to Washington. "Among the passengers were athletes and coaches. Absolutely shocking."
Russian news outlet Mash published a list of 13 skaters, many of whom are children of Russian immigrants to the US, who were reportedly on the plane.
Inna Volyanskaya, a former figure skater who had competed for the Soviet Union, was also reportedly on the plane, TASS reported. She was a coach for the Washington Figure Skating Club, according to her website.
