An American Airlines plane with 64 passengers on board collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington's Potomac River airport in the early hours of this morning.

Anxiety is growing for the dozens of people who were aboard the plane that crashed into the icy waters of the Potomac River.

It is unclear if there are any survivors, but CBS News reported earlier that 18 bodies had been found while the search for others is still ongoing.

However, Senator Roger Marshall, who represents Kansas, where the passenger plane had taken off from, hinted that everyone on board is dead.

During a press conference, he said that it is very difficult to lose 60 citizens at the same time.

The Washington Post reported that rescue teams that emerged from the river said earlier that they found no survivors.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed his deep sadness over the tragedy in a video released by the press office, and said the plane of its regional subsidiary PSA had 60 passengers and 4 crew members on board when the crash occurred.
