US President Joe Biden warned China it was "playing with fire" over its stance on Taiwan and vowed to intervene militarily if the island was invaded.

The statement made during a press release from Japan, where he is paying an official visit, seems to contradict the stated position of the United States so far.

Asked if the US would militarily defend Taiwan if China invades it, while it has not done so in Ukraine, Biden replied: "Yes, this is the commitment we have made. The idea that can be taken by force… is not appropriate. "It would have repercussions throughout the region and it would be another action, similar to what happened in Ukraine."

China considers Taiwan as part of it and says it should reunite with the home country. The island, officially called the Republic of China, was formed by nationalists who took refuge there at the end of the civil war - which took place after World War II - at the end of which the communists took power in China.
