US President Donald Trump stated during an interview with Time magazine that the claim of ending the war in Ukraine within a day was "figurative".

"You said you would end the war in Ukraine on Day One?" journalist Eric Cortellessa asked.

"Well, I said that figuratively and I said it as an exaggeration. Of course, people know that when I said that, it was said in jest, but it was also said that it will end," the White House chief said.

In March, the US president also stated that he was being "a little sarcastic" when he repeatedly boasted in his 2024 presidential campaign that he could end the war in Ukraine within just 24 hours and even before taking office.

"Well, I was being a little sarcastic when I said that," Trump said. "What I really mean is that I would like to see the matter resolved and, I think, I think I will succeed."
