US President Donald Trump declared that the United States will begin "blocking any ship attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz."
In a lengthy post on the social network Truth Social, he said that the recent negotiations "went well" and that "most points were agreed upon," but stressed that the main issue, that of nuclear weapons, remained unresolved.
Trump said that at some point an agreement could be reached for free passage through the strait, but according to him, Iran has obstructed this process by claiming that there may be naval mines in the area.
In the same reaction, he announced that he had instructed the US Navy to stop any ship in international waters that has paid fees to Iran, as well as to intervene to destroy mines placed in the Strait of Hormuz.
"No one who pays an illegal tax will have safe passage on the high seas," Trump said, warning that any attack on American forces or civilian ships would be met with a harsh response.
"The blockade will begin soon," he added.
In a second tweet, Trump accused Iran of not keeping its promise to open the strait, stressing that this has caused consequences for many countries around the world.
He also spoke about the negotiations taking place in Islamabad, saying he was briefed by Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and negotiator Jared Kushner. Trump also praised the role of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in these talks.
According to him, after about 20 hours of negotiations, one fundamental issue remains: Iran is not willing to give up its nuclear ambitions.
"In many ways, the points that were agreed upon are better than continuing military operations, but they are irrelevant in the face of the danger that nuclear power poses in the hands of an unstable country," Trump concluded.
Putin offers himself as mediator
Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian that he is ready to contribute to mediation efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, the Kremlin said.
"Vladimir Putin stressed his readiness to further facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," the Kremlin said in a press release after the call.
