Greece will ban the use of social media for children under 15 starting January 1, 2027, the country's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced.

Through a video on social media, the Greek prime minister emphasized that the regulation will be announced in the summer months and "Greece will be among the first countries to take this initiative" for social media.

"We have decided to move forward with something difficult but necessary: ??to ban access to social media for children under 15," he said, adding that the goal is to push the EU in this direction as well.

He then addressed the children, saying, "Now I'm sure the much younger ones will be angry with me. If I were your age, I would probably feel the same way, but our role is not to be nice."

"If something makes us feel stressed, worse or less well than we actually are, then it's worth putting a brake on it. Our goal is not to distance you from technology, which can be a source of inspiration, knowledge and creation," Mitsotakis continued.

Finally, addressing the parents, the Greek Prime Minister noted: "No law can replace your presence. This policy is simply a tool to help you. I sincerely believe that in a few years we will all see it as something positive and self-evident."
