A senior Iranian official has warned that the entire region, including Saudi Arabia, could face power outages if the United States strikes Iran's power plants.
According to the source, who spoke to Reuters, tensions remain high and there are no direct negotiations with Washington, which is demanding that Iran back down under pressure.
He stressed that any step towards reducing tensions will depend on reciprocity.
"There will only be flexibility if we see flexibility from the American side," the source said.
According to him, the United States is demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran will not do so in exchange for "empty promises."
The source added that Qatar has conveyed messages from Iran to the US, including a warning of attacks on energy infrastructure.
He also warned that in the event of escalation, Iran's allies could also close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic point that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and through which a significant part of global oil trade and supplies passes.
