France has declared maximum security alert after a terrorist attack at a school left a teacher dead and several others injured.

A maximum security alert means "maximum vigilance and protection in the event of an imminent threat of a terrorist attack or immediately following an attack."

There are also "concerns that the entire territory could be targeted".

A source told Le Parisien that the man rushed into the school shouting "Allahu Akbar" as he attacked Gambetta High School in Arras on Friday morning.

According to French news outlet Le Figaro, one teacher was killed, a security guard was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times and another teacher was seriously injured.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said: "A police operation took place at Gambetta High School in Arras. The author has been arrested by the police."
