The chairman of the Serbian List, Goran Rakic, said on Friday that the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, which has the support of Belgrade, is ready to participate in the new municipal elections in the north of Kosovo.
He said during a media conference in North Mitrovica that the Serbian List made this decision in cooperation with the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
Rakiq emphasized that now "the ball has moved to Pristina's court", and that he expects new elections to be called in the northern municipalities of Kosovo as soon as possible.
"I have to say that we must be united and in these impossible conditions try to be creators of our own destiny and protect people. We have always made political decisions in the interest of the citizens, not seeing if they are making political points", said Rakiq.
The four Serb-majority municipalities in the north, North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, are now led by Albanian mayors who took office after the April elections, which were boycotted and bitterly contested by local Serbs, causing tension between the situation.
Kosovo, after facing punitive measures from the EU, pledged to reorganize the elections, but only wants to do so through an administrative directive that allows citizens to dismiss their respective mayors through a petition.
The petition must be signed by 20 percent of the voting body in the given municipality, so that it can then be pushed forward. If all the steps required by the administrative instruction, which was published in September, are completed, then the vote for the removal of the mayor of the municipality is held. For the removal of the mayor, 50 percent +1 vote of the citizens on the voter list is required. Then, new elections are announced.
On September 13, the Minister of Local Government Administration of Kosovo, Elbert Krasniqi, said that the resignation of the Albanian mayors of the four Serb-majority municipalities in the north of Kosovo "is only a request of Belgrade", insisting that the mayors can leave their offices only through the new administrative instruction.
But since then, the situation has only become more tense, as the Kosovo Police was attacked on September 24 by a group of armed Serbs in the village of Banjské in Zveçan, where Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku was killed, and later the then vice president of To the Serbian list, Millan Radoicic took responsibility for the attack.
Kosovo has accused Serbia of trying to "annex the entire north of Kosovo", which Serbia has denied.
On October 12, the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, called on the representatives of the Serbs in the north of Kosovo to initiate the holding of new elections in North Mitrovica, Zvečan, Leposavić and Zubin Potok.
Minister Krasniqi has said in the past that early elections can be held if 20 percent of voters in a municipality sign a petition for the removal of the mayor of that municipality.
According to the Law on local self-government, early elections for the mayor of the municipality can be held if the current mayor resigns; in case the citizens request the dismissal of the mayor of the municipality through a petition signed by 20 percent of the voters of the respective municipality; as well as in the event that the mayor does not appear at the workplace for more than a month, without reason. /REL
