Finnish President Sauli Niinistste is expected to formally announce today his position on his country's candidacy for NATO membership.
According to the presidency, the announcement is expected to be made around 10 am local time.
Finland, which shares an 810-mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually increased its co-operation with NATO as one of its "partner" countries since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
But she has been deterred from membership to maintain friendly relations with her eastern neighbor.
Today, however, President Sauli Niinisto is expected to announce the country's official intention to apply. The government and parliament are also expected to give their approval.
