The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a Milwaukee County judge on Friday, FBI Director Kash Patel said on social media, accusing her of helping an undocumented immigrant evade arrest.
Judge Hannah Dugan is facing two counts of obstructing and concealing an individual from arrest, a law enforcement official told CNN.
“We believe that Judge Dugan misdirected federal agents to intentionally remove the subject who was to be arrested in her court, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject – an illegal alien – to evade arrest,” Patel’s post read before it was quickly deleted.
"Thankfully our agents tracked him down and he has been in custody ever since, but obstructing the judge created an increased risk to the public."
Dugan is in federal custody while awaiting an initial court appearance, the law enforcement official said.
Brady McCarron, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, confirmed to CNN that Dugan was arrested at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the local courthouse where she works. She was then processed by the Federal Marshals Service.
She is expected to appear before a federal judge in the Eastern District of Wisconsin later Friday morning.
The arrest on federal charges is an escalation in the Trump administration's focus on judicial behavior, particularly in immigration enforcement. The Justice Department has repeatedly said it will investigate any local officials who fail to assist federal authorities on immigration matters.
Flores-Ruiz has not yet pleaded guilty and is being held in custody, according to records in federal court.
