A new earthquake has struck western Afghanistan - days after two other powerful earthquakes, which have left more than 1,000 people dead.

The United States Geological Survey has said that the 6.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded near the city of Herat. The depth of the earthquake was 6.3 kilometers.

So far there are no reports of casualties.

More than 90 percent of those who died in the previous two earthquakes were women and children, the United Nations Children's Agency (UNICEF) said.

Herat is Afghanistan's third largest city, and is located close to the Iranian border.

Afghanistan is often hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain area, as it lies on the Eurasian and Indian tectonic zones.
