Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss regional tensions and recent incidents involving Turkish airspace.
Erdogan stressed that any violation of Turkish airspace is unacceptable and cannot be justified for any reason. He added that Turkey will continue to take all necessary measures to respond to such incidents.
For his part, Pezeshkian stated that the missiles reported to have entered Turkish airspace were not of Iranian origin and that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the source of the incident.
The comments come after NATO air defenses neutralized another ballistic missile that entered Turkish airspace. Erdogan also stressed that attacks on neighboring countries serve no one and must stop immediately.
He underlined the importance of reopening diplomatic channels and said Turkey is working to support efforts aimed at de-escalation and dialogue in the region. Erdogan also expressed regret over the loss of civilian lives during the conflicts, referring in particular to the attack on a school in Minab.
The Turkish president also reiterated his condolences on the passing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and expressed hope that the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader will contribute to regional peace and stability.
