A former British prime minister was involved in a sex triangle with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, royal historian Andrew Lownie has claimed in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Lownie joined Sunday Times bestselling author Sarah Vine to find out more about the latest releases of the Epstein files by the US Department of Justice.

Last week, the Justice Department released the bulk of documents so far from the investigation into pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, consisting of more than 3 million documents, photos and videos.

The historiographer wrote the unauthorized biography titled "The Rise and Fall of the House of York," which documents the spectacular downfall of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

As an early voice warning about his disturbing behavior and compromising network of connections, Lownie has become a controversial authority on the British elite's ties to Epstein.

In addition to alleging that in 2006, Andrew and Epstein attempted to pay an exotic dancer to have sex with both of them simultaneously, Lownie claimed that the disgraced prince was not the only member of British high society to have had sexual relations with Epstein and Maxwell.

Lownie said: "I've heard a lot of talk about sex threesomes - including a triangle between Ghislaine and a British prime minister."

“A recent prime minister?” Vine asked.

"Actually a former prime minister, but he's not Winston Churchill," the author joked.

Lownie claimed that the public still doesn't know much about Andrew's activities with Epstein.

He said elements within Buckingham Palace and the government "aided and abetted" the former Duke of York, concealing his behaviour.

Andrew has consistently denied all allegations of sexual misconduct. In 2022, he settled a civil case with Virginia Giuffre without admitting liability, although he expressed regret for his association with Epstein.

“We have a lot more for Andrew,” Lownie said.

"I think we'll also find out that he was aided and abetted more than we realize. That will expose other names that will come to light."

"That's why I think the King needs to speak out. Andrew has been protected for a long time by a whole range of people around him, many of whom are in official positions."

"Two things need to happen: we need to have a parliamentary inquiry into Andrew's time as Trade Representative."

"Secondly, all the files on Andrew's time as Trade Representative should be released. By law, they should be in the National Archives. This would help to clean out the 'stables' and restore some of the trust."

Regarding Epstein specifically, Lownie claimed that the financier was a Russian intelligence asset, recruited by the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

He said Epstein and others were recruited to run 'honeytrap' operations in Britain and the United States, with the aim of securing influence and blackmail over powerful people.

Lownie explained: "In the 1930s, the Russians penetrated the establishment through Oxford and Cambridge. Then they realized they could do it through the royal family."

"They realized that there were money-hungry members within the royal family who would sleep with certain people and give them access and credibility."

"There is material that was seized by the FBI that was never made public – videos that included Andrew. Some of this material was given to Putin. We know that Andrew was involved in honeytraps in Russia, in Central Asia, everywhere."

"But, without a doubt, I have been given evidence that Epstein was a Russian source and that he was running these honeytrap operations. He was trading information and blackmail."
