The leader of one of the most notorious gangs, Sanjeeva Kumar Samararatne, has been executed by gunfire inside the courtroom.
The shocking incident took place in Sri Lanka, while the perpetrator was disguised as a lawyer, entering the courtroom without any obstacles.
According to foreign media, gang leader Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne was being escorted to court to face legal proceedings when he was shot. Police say he was a suspect in several murder cases.
The shootings in the capital Colombo are among a series of killings by rival gangs, which have continued their 'activity' as authorities vow to crack down on lawlessness and bring their members under arrest.
The gang leader, widely known as Ganemulle Sanjeewa, had been in custody since his arrest in September 2023.
Police said he was escorted to court Wednesday by dozens of police officers. He was rushed to the hospital after being shot, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The gunman managed to flee the scene but was later caught by police. He has been identified by authorities and local media, but police say he used several names.
Meanwhile, the police have also announced a 25-year-old woman wanted, promising a reward for anyone who provides information, as she is suspected of being an accomplice in the crime. A police officer and a van driver, suspected of having aided the perpetrator, have also been arrested.
The incident has also raised questions about security at the courthouse, while authorities are reviewing security measures.
