A shocking incident has been uncovered in eastern France, where a man has been accused of keeping his 9-year-old son isolated in a van since 2024.
According to French prosecutors, the child was found in a serious physical condition after police intervened in a village called Hagenbach, near the borders with Switzerland and Germany. The alarm was raised by a neighbor, who reported hearing "the voices of a child" coming from a parked vehicle.
Law enforcement officers forced open the van on Monday, where they found the boy lying in a fetal position, naked and covered with a blanket, on a pile of garbage and next to fecal matter. The prosecutor in the case, Nicolas Heitz, said the child was malnourished and no longer able to walk due to prolonged sitting.
The father, 43, told authorities he had kept his son in the vehicle since November 2024, claiming he was acting to protect him from his partner, who he said "wanted to send the child to psychiatric treatment."
Meanwhile, the family lived in an apartment with two other girls, the boy's 12-year-old sister and 10-year-old half-sister. According to Le Parisien, the child stated that his father brought him food twice a day and left him bottles of water.
He also revealed that he was forced to urinate in plastic bottles and defecate in garbage bags, while his last shower was at the end of 2024.
The father claimed that his partner was unaware that the child was in the van. However, authorities have charged him with “illegal and arbitrary detention of a minor” and deprivation of food and medical care. He has been remanded in custody.
His partner also faces charges of "failing to report abuse," but has been released on bail.
Locals said the boy had apparently disappeared suddenly in late 2024, but believed the family's explanation that he had been placed in a care facility. Some neighbours reported hearing occasional noises from the van, but were told it was a cat.
