Since its founding, Israel has been surrounded by enemies. With some it is in a state of war today, with others better. What are Israel's relations with some of its neighbors?

Egypt was the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel. Previously, after the creation of Israel in 1948, the two countries were at war for decades and fought each other in several Arab-Israeli wars. Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979, which, among other things, returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. While Israel was granted due passage of its ships through international waters around the peninsula. Therefore Egypt had to swallow the exclusion from the Arab League for ten years. According to polls, the recognition of Israel as a state is still unpopular among the Egyptian population.

During the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, whose daughter organization is the Palestinian Hamas, relations deteriorated significantly. Cairo bypassed the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, and in 2011 protesters attacked the Israeli embassy in Egypt.

After the coup and the coming to power of General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2013, the neighbors got closer again: among other things, they cooperated in suppressing the Islamist uprising in Sinai after the overthrow of the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. In 2015, Egypt voted for the first time at the United Nations in favor of Israel - for a seat on the UN space agency UNOOSA. During Donald Trump's US presidency, Egypt spoke to the Palestinians and Jordan in favor of supporting US efforts to bring peace to the region. In 2021 and 2022, the Israeli prime minister traveled to Egypt for diplomatic talks.

Three days before the Hamas attack, according to US intelligence, Egypt warned Israel of an attack from Gaza, possibly at a low level. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denies this, while Cairo has not commented.

At the moment, real cooperation between the neighbors seems to be moving slowly: according to Egyptian information, aid supplies have decreased at the Egyptian-controlled border crossing in the Gaza Strip at Rafah. On the other side of the border, civilians are waiting to leave the country - but the Israeli government is not cooperating. Both Israel and Hamas terrorists deny that there are negotiations to open the crossing.

What are Israel's relations with its immediate neighbors?

Jordan

Shiite Hezbollah, which fought Israel in the early 1980s, still controls Lebanon as a state within a state. The Iranian government-backed militia denies Israel its citizenship and right to exist, regularly attacks the Israeli military and describes Hamas' attacks and crimes as "heroic". There have been several military conflicts between Hezbollah and Israel, for example the 2006 Lebanon War.

Since the Hamas attack, the Shiite militia has fired rockets and mortar shells at Israel again. Israel has also attacked targets in southern Lebanon with planes and helicopters, and there has been gunfire on the border. Observers now fear that Israel could find itself in a two-front conflict - with Hamas and Hezbollah, which is far better armed.

SYRIA

Like Lebanon, Syria to date only has a formal ceasefire agreement with Israel. In 1981, Israel annexed the Golan Heights, which it had occupied since the Six-Day War in 1967. Although there were some secret talks about a possible return until the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, nothing has changed. Lebanon's Hezbollah, which denies Israel its right to exist, has fought alongside Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad since 2013. Israel, for its part, supported several rebel groups with arms until 2018. In 2021, the Israeli air force also attacked Iranian positions in Syria.

After a strong earthquake earlier in the year, there were reports that Israel wanted to send humanitarian aid to the neighboring country - but it remained unclear where the idea came from and what ultimately happened. Since Israel recently began to defend itself against Hamas attacks, the Israeli side has also attacked targets in Syria.

Assad and his ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose military support has kept Assad in power, are calling for an end to attacks on the Gaza Strip. In addition, the deportation of Palestinians must be stopped and the delivery of aid to Gaza must be made possible, says Damascus./ DW
