Former US President Bill Clinton has said that he understood as early as 2011 that it was only a matter of time before the Russian invasion of Ukraine after a heated discussion in Davos, Switzerland with Vladimir Putin.

During that meeting, Clinton reveals that Putin rejected a US-brokered deal agreed to by his predecessor, Boris Yeltsin. It said Russia would respect Ukraine's territorial integrity, while Kiev would give up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal.

"Vladimir Putin told me in 2011, three years before he took Crimea, that he did not agree with the agreement I made with Boris Yeltsin," recalled the former American president.

"He said: I do not agree with that agreement and I am not obliged to support it. From that day, I knew that the attack was a matter of time."

This statement by Clinton was made during an event held at the "92nd Street Y", the Global Culture Center in New York.

He was present together with his wife, Hillary, former Secretary of State and candidate for President of America. They said they urged Western countries to step up support for Ukraine and said Kiev could resist if it had enough weapons and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton said Russia's failure in Ukraine and the West's harsh response to the invasion prevented a Chinese attack to retake Taiwan.

"Xi saw what happened. "Before the Russian invasion, there was a great chance that China would launch an attack to retake Taiwan within two or three years, but now that time frame has been pushed back," said Hillary Clinton.
