After the exchange of prisoners, US President Joe Biden has sanctioned former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Tehran's Ministry of Intelligence.
The head of the White House pardoned five imprisoned Iranians in exchange for the release of five Americans detained in Iran.
The sanctions against Ahmadinejad and the Ministry of Intelligence, a senior US official explained last night in a conference call, were imposed in the case of Bob Levinson, a former FBI agent who disappeared in Iran under mysterious circumstances.
"The United States will never give up on Levinson's case. We demand that the Iranian regime give a full account of what happened to him,” the official said.
The Biden administration reached an agreement with Iran a few days ago to release five American citizens detained in the country in exchange for five Iranian prisoners.
The prisoner exchange agreement between the two opposing countries was brokered by Doha. The deal also includes unlocking $6 billion in Iranian funds from a South Korean bank.
A Qatari plane flew the five American citizens and two of their relatives from Tehran shortly after the two sides were notified that the funds had been transferred to bank accounts in Doha, a source familiar with the matter told the news agency.
At the same time, two of the five Iranians detained in the United States arrived in Qatar, a US official said. Three others had asked not to return to Iran.
The release of funds enabled the prisoner exchange under an agreement reached after months of talks between the United States and Iran. The two countries have deep disagreements over Tehran's nuclear ambitions and other issues.
The five Americans with dual US and Iranian citizenship will be flown from Doha to the United States. "They are in good health," said an Iranian official with knowledge of the US prisoner release process.
In exchange, five Iranians arrested in the US will be released. Earlier, the Spokesman of Iran's Foreign Ministry said that two Iranians will return to Tehran, while two will stay in the US at their request. A prisoner would be reunited with his family in a third country, he added.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the funds, blocked in South Korea after US sanctions on Iran were tightened in 2018, will be available to Tehran on Monday. According to the agreement, Qatar will ensure that the funds are used to purchase goods for humanitarian purposes. So far there have been no public comments from the US government
