A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred at 05:10 in Florence, Italy. The epicenter was 3 km south-west of the municipality of Marradi, in Mugello. The shock was felt in Florence, but also throughout the region and in Emilia-Romagna and Marche.
Local media report that there is no material damage or injured people, but it is learned that hundreds of citizens have left the streets after the earthquake and the Civil Defense is conducting checks.
"There is a lot of concern, a lot of people on the streets, but there are no reports of special damage," the mayor of Marradi, Tommaso Triberti, told Raineës24.
"There is no significant damage, there was a lot of fear, with people on the streets. Controls will continue throughout the day, but there are no reports of injured people or special damage," said the head of the Department of Civil Protection Fabrizio Curcio to Sky Tg24.
As a precautionary measure, today in Marradi schools of all levels will remain closed. The President of the Region Eugenio Giani wrote on social networks: "At the moment there are no particularly critical situations. Checks on buildings and structures will continue."
There were also problems in the railway network. Two lines were cut, the section from Pontassieve to Borgo San Lorenzo and between Florence and Vaglia towards Faenza. In addition, the high-speed line was diverted to the old direct route passing through Prato.
There have been numerous calls to the operating room from frightened citizens. Reports of damage are being investigated. In the afternoon, the visit of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to Forlì, for the opening of the school year, is planned.
